My Thoughts on Starcraft 2

The magnificent Hyperion

Having played the beta once, I delved myself first into the campaign (besides being a story maniac). The choices of missions and the general variety are nice. The CGI cinematic is very nice despite the first one being a spoiler to what would happen in the end of the story. The in game videos are done well to please me. However, there was never a sense of urgency to play certain missions despite what the dialogue says in the selection menu. You could literally finish one of the few subplots without affecting the other. Of course, you’d miss out on a few tech choices but here’s a fact.

The army compositions you use is very limited. Terran Marine, Medic, Marauder and siege tank composition is seriously strong. There is generally not much need to deviate from that composition unless conditions of a mission forced otherwise. That army akin to their Starcraft 1 predecessor is extremely efficient at staying alive while producing a huge damage output. It can practically fight anything, even units that are designed to counter them although in small numbers and good control of course. There’s also another pathway which is the Terran mech of Siege tanks, goliaths, Thors, Hellions or Science vessels. It’s also equally strong but not as mobile as infantrymen. Though, that immobility usually isn’t important because of the next point.

This is what your army is mostly going to look like throughout the entire game

The Artificial Intelligence is generally not that difficult at least for the lower end range. Being a competitive Starcraft 1 player, the difficult elements is mostly the surprise factor. Once you get the gist and flow of the mission, the missions are quite capable to be done even at Brutal. I had a friend play the campaign at normal. Despite completely new to Starcraft 2, without use of hotkey and stuff that makes a player competitively good, he just waltzes through the campaign easily without fail. The upgrades and sequence of missions you choose also affect relative difficulty of the missions. Some are horrendously easy once you acquire a certain tech. My advice is to play the campaign at Hard or Brutal difficulty, that’s where the fun is.

The Lost Viking Minigame...I don't like him either

Reminds of old times

Great writeup. It's one of the very few reviews about StarCraft 2 I've read coming from a Malaysian :)
